There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes is a disorder in the immune system that destroys your body’s insulin-making ability. Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistant. Your pancreas stops using insulin causing problems in getting sugar from the blood into the cells for energy. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar developed during pregnancy by is resolved after the baby is born. However, it can increase risk of complication during your pregnancy and development into type 2 diabetes for both mother and child in later years. Prediabetes is the earlier phase of diabetes that may be managed with exercise and proper diet and regular sugar monitoring of the blood so as to prevent it from developing into type 2 diabetes and even result to remission.

Effects of Diabetes

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of diabetes that experienced with extreme thirst, excessive urination and fatigue. If not treated may lead to loss of consciousness and even death.

Kidney damage may result from diabetes and affect the ability of the kidney to filter waste products from the blood.

High blood pressure usually develops with diabetes due to high blood glucose levels that may cause formation of fatty deposits in the walls of the blood vessels.

Risks of infections or ulcers of the foot may develop.  That may lead to amputation due to poor blood flow and nerve damage. There is also the risk of heart disease and stroke.
